Building reliable data pipelines
A pipeline becomes valuable when people can trust both its output and its behavior. Reliability is less about a single tool and more about the decisions surrounding the whole system.
Make failures easy to understand
Useful errors answer three questions: what failed, where it failed, and what someone can do next. Logs should provide that context without requiring an engineer to reconstruct an entire run.
Design for safe retries
Jobs should be idempotent whenever possible. A retry should restore progress, not duplicate records or leave partial state behind.
- Define clear inputs and outputs.
- Validate data at meaningful boundaries.
- Separate recoverable failures from permanent ones.
- Monitor freshness as well as execution status.
Keep learning from production
The best pipeline design evolves from real incidents. Each failure is an opportunity to improve a contract, an alert, or a recovery path—and make the next failure less surprising.
